Elena Perova | Istock | Getty ImagesJust ahead of the holiday season, Walmart had encouraging news for inflation-weary shoppers: Prices on food and other staples were falling instead of rising. But the retail giant backpedaled this week, saying higher prices on many grocery items and household staples like paper goods have stuck. Food prices climbed 2.6%, fueled by a 5.1% jump in prices for food away from home, a category that includes restaurant meals and vending machine purchases. That gives their makers the ability to keep raising prices to mitigate higher costs, even as their volume drops. Even some of the biggest U.S. brands have signaled that consumers' tolerance of higher prices has worn thin.

Consumers are spending more of their budgets on food than they have in 30 years. And high food costs could stick around for a while, executives and small business owners have said. US consumers spent 11.3% of their disposable income on food in 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing data from the US Department of Agriculture. The last time food made up as much of their spending was in 1991, the Journal reported. AdvertisementIt looks like elevated food costs will likely stick around, too.

We’d like to put that in a toaster.’”He took the piece of pie with him and said he “had to break every rule in the book” to create Pop-Tarts. In the following few years, frosting and sprinkles were added and Kellogg created “Milton the Toaster” to be its mascot. He was also humble about helping create Pop-Tarts.

The Pop-Tarts inventor began his career as a part-time worker in high school washing trucks at Hekman. After serving in the Army Air Corps in occupied Japan during World War II, Post returned to the company and worked up the corporate ladder. “Pesticide exposure during pregnancy may lead to an increased risk of birth defects, low birth weight, and fetal death,” the American Academy of Pediatrics stated. “Exposure in childhood has been linked to attention and learning problems, as well as cancer.”Yet pesticide exposure is widespread, even for chemicals that were banned years ago by federal agencies. In the 2023 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce — a list of nonorganic produce with the most pesticides — researchers found 210 different pesticides on the 12 foods. In addition, consumers can ask food companies to “release the actual test results of pesticide concentrations in their products,” said EWG’s Temkin. “Food companies have not been publishing such data, instead relying on generalities,” she said via email.

The use of Eli Lilly 's Mounjaro for weight loss can pull shoppers away from the snack aisle — though the transition will likely be gradual, according to Morgan Stanley. Kaufman noted a six-week study presented at ObesityWeek that showed users of Mounjaro cut calories and weight at a faster clip. The study also produced evidence that medication takers had a "significant reduction in food consumption," as well as fewer cravings for sweets and fast food fats. And while taking Mounjaro reduced food cravings overall, it had a particular impact on sweets, the study found. All four of the snack makers Kaufman said to watch have lost share value in 2023.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday gave his take on Kellogg's decision to split into two separate companies, saying investors may want to wait and see how these stories play out before thinking about buying. Kellogg's two businesses are now cereal-focused WK Kellogg and snack-focused Kellanova . "Maybe someday Kellanova will be worth circling back to, but in a world where snack food stocks have gotten the cold shoulder, I don't think we're there yet." Before the split, which was announced last year, snacks accounted for 80% of Kellogg's net sales in 2021. "You've really got to stick your neck out to buy Kellanova or WK Kellogg at these levels, and I don't think they're giving you much reason to take the risk," Cramer said.

Birkenstock is the latest high-profile listing to put investor focus on the initial public offering (IPO) market, which is gradually reopening after two relatively quiet years and a burst of activity in September. AllBirds (BIRD.O), Dr Martens (DOCS.L), and On Running (ONON.N) have all seen their market value fall since their IPOs in 2021.
